This is a very special event on a number of fronts. Before dining, we will ask our members to endorse a change of the name of the club and to vote on a newly proposed set of by-laws. We hope to simplify our name to Portugal Wine Club, with your endorsement. Following the business meeting, we will be matching fortified wines with a specially selected menu prepared by the superb chefs at Chiado. This should prove to be an event second to none. You won’t want to miss the formal business meeting or the dinner.

Price:               $95 members. Guests $105. Corporate members may bring four persons at the member price.

Tasting Notes

 

Alves de Sousa White Port

Good quality White Port isn’t all that easy to find, but it’s worth the search. Alves de Sousa is not your ordinary White Port – it has so much more complexity and character. Perfect balance between the sweetness and the acidity and the dry nutty character.

 

Leacock’s Rainwater Madeira LCBO – $21.95

Topaz colour with golden reflections. Characteristic Madeira bouquet of dried fruits, orange peel and notes of wood. Medium dry at first, followed by an attractive freshness of citrus flavours, with a long, luxurious finish. Best served as an aperitif, lightly chilled.

 

Niepoort Ruby LCBO – $13.65

Fresh, young and fruity with lots of red cherries and red fruits. Dark red in colour with a fresh vibrant aroma of dark fruits which follows through on the palate along with an almost mineral character, a youthful wine with good extract and great balance, offering superb “drinkability”.

 

Tawny 10 year old

Expect a characteristic nutty quality and delicious mature honeyed fruit, mellowed by aging in seasoned oak casks. Deep amber in colour, with complex orange peel and marzipan aromas, the palate showing rich fruitcake spiciness with hints of walnuts and an elegant, long finish.

 

Favaios Moscatel do Douro

Pale amber with a greenish yellow rim. A restrained nose shows subtle orange peel/fruit cake with a hint of tobacco. Though very soft and smooth in the mouth it shows a remarkable freshness, delicacy and persistence of barley sugar, caramel and nuts. Impressive delicacy and finesse

 

Casa Ermelinda Freitas Moscatel Superior

Deep reddish orange hue with lovely depth to the nose and palate, good freshness too.  Rich, expansive and warm with nuts, thick cut marmalade, marzipan and caramel, it has terrific length/resonance.  A lovely wine.
