 For our October event we worked with 30.50 Imports Inc.  a boutique wine agency based inToronto. It was established with the aim of importing fine wines fromPortugal. They are passionate ambassadors of their suppliers.


Vintner Joao Barbosa will join us and lead the discussion. His firm produces wine in the Alentejo and Ribatejo regions. We will have 6 table wines and a Moscatel. Tasting notes are on the next page.




Hors D’Oeuvres

Ceviche of shredded salted cod, tossed with julienne of roasted peppers,

red onions, olives, parsley and extra virgin olive oil.

Pan roasted lamb shank – thyme marinade, port wine reduction, scallion mash,

accompanied by a steamed medley of seasonal vegetables, tossed with extra virgin olive oil.


Dark chocolate tart, honey graham crust, bitter sweet dark chocolate, fresh berries.

Tasting Notes



Ninfa Espumante Bruto, Porta de Teira. Tejo, Portugal.

A traditional method brut sparkling wine made entirely from pinot noir grapes with a minimum 18-months of ageing on lees before disgorgement. Aromas of ripe citrus and apple with notes of biscuit. Meduim-bodied with fine mousse and a touch of minerality on the palate. Best with fresh oysters, shellfish soups.


1999 Sidonio de Sousa Super Reserva Espumante Bruto. Bairrada, Portugal.

A traditional method Bairrada sparkling wine made from 100% baga grapes. Medium ruby in colour with sour cherry, eucalyptus and toasty aromas providing a rustic, earthy experience. Medium bodied with delicate mouse showing fine tannins and bright acidity. Traditionally paired with ‘leitao’ slow charcoal-roasted suckling pig.


First course

2008 Ninfa Touriga Nacional-Syrah, Porta de Teira. Tejo, Portugal.

Deep ruby in colour with upfront black cherry, plum and nuances of herbs, minerals. Medium in body and round on the palate this wine shows ripe red and black fruit supported by fresh acidity, soft tannins and a long finish.


2005 Sidonio de Sousa Reserva. Bairrada, Portugal.

Made from 100% baga the core is deep ruby with a garnet rim. Black berry fruit and a hand-full of crushed herbs, earth and gamey aromas show complexity. Medium-bodied with firm tannins, dark fruit and firm acidity that carries the fruit well into a long, savoury finish.


Main course

2007 Lapa dos Gaivoes Escolha, Valle de Junco. Alentejo, Portugal.

Ripe black berry fruit is accompanied by dark spices, chocolate and toasty notes. Full in body this wine opens aggressively and fills the palate with dark fruit and spice. The finish is long; dark chocolate lingers. Tannins are fine and the structure shows power without compromising on elegance.


2000 Sidonio de Sousa Garrafeira. Bairrada, Portugal.

Only made in the best growing years this 100% baga displays both wild red and black berry fruit, minerals and tobacco showing tertiary notes of cured meats and dry earth. On the palate the wine shows youthful energy, full in body with fresh acidity and firm tannins calling for rare cuts of meat. The finish is long and complex.
